Info Umum: Competitions: Win a trip to a nature camp

WATER covers 71 per cent of the Earth's surface. Due to pollution, largely contributed by human activities, only a small percentage is fit for human consumption.

And since 60 per cent of the human body is made up of water, it is even more crucial now for the resource to be carefully managed to ensure our survival.

To coincide with World Water Day last Monday, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and Coca Cola launched the Water Vision Contest for secondary school students. To kick-off the yearly competition, MNS senior education executive Evelyn Lim Ai Lin recently gave a talk on the importance of water to SMK Putrajaya Precinct 9 (2) students.

Lim, who has worked with MNS for the past 10 years, obviously enjoys what she does. The 80 students sat transfixed as Lim explained the importance of water, its sources, qualities and problems affecting its supply, such as pollution.

The talk aimed to raise awareness of the importance of water and help students identify important issues pertaining to its conservation.

"I love working with children. They are receptive and I learn a lot from them too.

"I also promote nature appreciation camps and work with nature clubs in schools to organise various activities.

"Nature events are a way for students to observe happenings outside of school. It is beneficial since students spend a lot of time in the classroom, " says Lim.

Contrary to the popular belief, a science background is not a requirement for a career in the field of environment although it helps. All that is needed, says Lim, is basic knowledge about the environment and a passion to spread it to others.

"I have a strong Geography background because I studied Environmental Studies in University of Malaya. The main challenge in my job is to inspire people to care for the environment."

Now in its fifth year, the Water Vision Contest also aims to encourage young participants to develop a sense of responsibility and a proactive attitude.

In addition to Lim's talk, participants of last year's contest, who represented SMK Putrajaya Presint 9 (2), also gave a presentation on their experience in the event.

Former contestant Zulashraf Abd. Rahman says: "Using multimedia is not as complicated as it seems. The teacher-adviser was there to assist us and we had a lot of fun with our water quality assessment project at the lake in Putrajaya Precinct 8."

The contest runs till May 15 and is open to Forms Three, Four and Five students. Each team of four students must submit a 15-minute multimedia presentation on the topic Water Conservation Issues Near You, in either Bahasa Malaysia or English.

The top three winners will be treated to a three-day/two-night nature camp organised by MNS at Forest Research Institute of Malaysia where they will learn about stream and tropical forest ecologies, as well as visit Kuala Kubu Baru Dam.

In addition, each member of the top team will receive an iPod Touch (8G) each. The second and third place winners will receive cash. For details of the contest, visit www. mns.org.my or call 03-2287-9422.
